First Freedom Center Opens, Edgar Allan Poe’s 206th Birthday Party, Vibe Frost, Justin Roberts at CMoR and Jewish Food Festival...all this weekend.
First Freedom Center Opens - Friday
The First Freedom Center opens to the public this Friday with a splashy ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony. At 3 p.m., the doors open to the public with 2,200 square feet of installations that explore religious liberty from European roots to today. Outside the center, a monumental spire designed by Christopher Hildebrand was installed to mark the site. The Center sits on the site where the Virginia General Assembly met in 1786 and ensured the right of Americans to freely choose religion. 1321 E. Main St., 643-1786. Open daily starting Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Sunday and Monday. Free entry.
Edgar Allan Poe’s 206th Birthday Party - Saturday
Celebrate the famous writer’s birthday for 12 straight hours at the Poe Museum with the “world’s largest” Edgar Allan Poe birthday party …at least that’s how they’re billing it. This year’s party runs from noon to midnight and will feature music, tours, performances, exhibit openings and a midnight toast to Poe in the Poe Shrine. Two of the walking tours include retracing the steps of Poe’s last night in Richmond and a tour led by Poe’s last fiancée Elmira Shelton of area sites she and Edgar enjoyed. Plus performances of “The Raven,” “Tell-Tale Heart,” and “The Cask of Amontillado;” live music from Margot MacDonald, The Embalmers, and Fool’s Errand. And lots more fun stuff. Noon to midnight.
Vibe Frost - Saturday
Positive Vibe Cafe turns 10 and celebrates with food specials and music from The Taters, Andy Vaughan and the Driveline and The Hullabaloos from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Jewish Food Festival - Sunday & Monday
Dig into delicious Jewish food such as brisket, hot corned beef, potato latkes, knishes, shwarma, cholent, matzah ball soup and much more. Plus live music and a celebration of Jewish culture. 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Weinstein Jewish Community Center.
Chili Cook Off Passport Wine Trail Weekend
Saturday & Sunday: Tour Central Virginia wineries, Cooper, Grayhaven, James River, Mattaponi, Weston Farms and Lake Anna, with a passport ticket that includes a souvenir wineglass, tastings at the six wineries and chili samplings at each winery. Starts at James River Cellar Winery.
