If you live in an apartment in Glen Allen, VA you can join thousands of families, friends, bike clubs and fun people who will bike around Richmond at night thanks for the Anthem Moonlight Ride on Saturday, August 16.
This Sports Backers event continues to grow, there were a record 2,975 cyclists who got to ride at night through Richmond in 2013.
The ride will feature a "Full Moon" (17 miles) and a "Half Moon" (8 miles) route through Lakeside, Bryan Park and the Near West End (see the courses). Afterward, thousands of participants stuck around for the post-ride party with pizza, ice cream, soda, beer, and a live concert.
There is a Blue Moon Costume & Tacky Light Contest: Dress up as your favorite character or decorate your bike with tacky lights. Prizes will be handed out to the top 3 individuals, duos/groups and children, so be as outrageous as possible! Who knows what will excite the judges? See costume details and rules.
Many riders decorated their bikes and bodies with glow stick and lights and get decked out in crazy costumes. Parents often pull trailers and tag-along bikes attached to their bicycles. This is a very fun crowd -- just like the Monument Avenue 10k, but on wheels and at night.
Location: Sports Backers Stadium, 100 Avenue of Champions
Registration: Online registration ends tomorrow at midnight Aug. 13, walk-up registration is available
Event charity: The Bike Walk RVA advocacy program is committed to making the Richmond area more bike and pedestrian friendly. They are working to encourage the construction of more paved multi-use trails, sidewalks and bike lanes in the Richmond region. They are also working to improve and expand the off-road trail systems in the region. A $25 donation to the event charity will result in a $10 discount off the race entry fee.
