Tacky Lights are a Richmond tradition. It’s that time of year when houses all over town light up with over-the-top displays.
It’s gotten so big Richmond has been covered by CBS, NBC, NPR – you name it. The mayor has even called Richmond, Virginia “the tacky lights capital of the world.”
The Tacky Lights Tour started in 1985 when Richmond DJ Mad Dog Gottlieb booked a Winn bus and took Richmonders on a “tacky lights” tour of 10 to 12 houses.
The tour was a huge hit and the Richmond Times-Dispatch started compiling a list of Tacky Lights houses in 1989.
For the past five years, Richmond.com has taken over that tradition. Combined, we’ve been covering Richmond Tacky Lights and publishing the definitive list of houses on the Tacky Lights tour for the past 24 years.
There is no one way to do the Tacky Lights. You can do-it-yourself. Pick out a house on the Tacky Lights List below and drive over to check it out.
